Discovery Sprint

The problem behind the problem

package-discovery-sprint-emanuel-jochum-zehetner

The Discovery Sprint is for teams facing a development decision who want to be sure they’re building the right thing. In three working days, we clarify what users actually need, which assumptions hold, and what your next decision can be built on.

Who is it for?

For product managers, CPOs and founders facing a bigger development decision. Especially when solutions are already being discussed internally but the actual problem hasn’t been clearly defined yet, or when the team is pulling in different directions.

What you get

  • You don’t build past the actual need, because the problem is clearly on the table first.
  • Your team shares a common picture of what problem you’re solving and for whom.
  • You can communicate clearly internally – and to investors – why you’re building this.
  • You know which assumptions hold and which don’t, before development budget is built on them.
  • You have a clear next step: what should be built, what shouldn’t, and in what order.

What’s included

  • Structured user and stakeholder interviews (3–5)

  • Synthesis session: patterns, contradictions, blind spots

  • Opportunity map as a collaborative board

  • Clear recommendation: what should be built next, what shouldn’t, and why

  • Sprint readout (PDF)

  • Working session with your team

Why work with me?

I’ve done discovery work in startups pitching the following week, and in teams that had been building past the same problem for years. In the Impact Hub Vienna programmes and at the TU Wien Innovation Incubation Center (i²c), I support founders in turning ideas into workable foundations. What always holds: the right problem is rarely the first one someone names. I specialise in finding it.

Frequently asked

Who should take part in the synthesis session?
Ideally 3–5 people from different areas: product, engineering, business. The session takes 2–3 hours and is the moment where a shared picture emerges.
What if we don’t have users to interview yet?
That happens, especially in early stages. We work with stakeholder interviews and whatever insights already exist. The result is less saturated, but still more valuable than pure assumptions.
What’s left at the end of the sprint?
An opportunity map, a written sprint readout, and the insights developed together in the synthesis session – all prepared so your team can carry the work forward. Not a one-off document, but a foundation.
How much time does our team need?
The biggest time investment is the synthesis session: 2–3 hours with 3–5 people. I run the interviews independently. Everything else runs in parallel with your normal operations.

Got an idea, but no clear picture yet?

If it’s unclear what should be built next, let’s use 30 minutes to figure out whether a Discovery Sprint gives your team the foundation it needs.
